Our Mission
STEM Gals is designed to spread awareness of the gender and racial gaps in STEM fields and to encourage girls to change the face of STEM professions and pursue opportunities that close this gender gap.
Women are significantly underrepresented in STEM professions. In the United States, women occupy about half of all jobs. However, they hold less than 25% of STEM occupations. While a myriad of STEM-related jobs is filled every year, the majority are occupied by men. From a young age, women are immensely discouraged from developing their ideas due to gender bias inculcated in childhood. According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), negative stereotypes about girls’ capabilities in mathematics and science drastically lower their performance in math and science courses as well as their interest in pursuing STEM careers. These statistics are most dismal for underrepresented women who hold less than 5% of STEM professions. Thus, our team created STEM Gals, a organization designed to spread awareness of the gender gap in STEM fields and to encourage girls to change the face of STEM professions and pursue opportunities that close this gender gap.
STEM Gals exposes and engages girls in grades kindergarten through grade eight to take an interest in and pursue STEM careers. The mission of STEM Gals is to alleviate the problem of female underrepresentation in STEM because our team believes that girls with remarkable ideas can enhance innovations in STEM fields. STEM Gals is devoted to closing the gender gap in STEM-related occupations by exposing girls to careers in computer science, medicine, engineering, and mathematics. Additionally, our team engages engineers, developers, researchers, executives, and physicians in teaching and motivating the next generation of women. Our guest speakers and mentors are leaders in their fields. Participants aspire to fulfill the same goals our guest speakers achieved in regards to STEM professions. In the duration of our team's presentations, students are exposed to STEM-related occupations and hands-on activities which linked to a particular STEM career. Our presentation and outreach initiatives emphasize on strategies proven to increase girls’ engagement in STEM. Here at STEM Gals we want to encourage girls to change the face of the STEM field and pursue an opportunity that closes the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
